Champorado is another popular Filipino dish. Interestingly, its origins are from Mexico. Guess what? it wasn’t exactly a dish when it was introduced in the Philippines centuries ago.😀

A Close Look At Champorado

Champorado evolved from the Mexican drink called champurrado. (Take note of the rr 😀 )

The latter is a thick, creamy, and chocolatey drink that’s composed of corn, sugar (sometimes piloncilo or brown sugar), cinnamon, milk, and chocolate.

To sweeten the champorado, we usually pour in some condensed milk before eating it. 👍

Champorado is usually eaten for breakfast in the Philippines. Not a far cry from porridge except for the fact that it’s actually chocolate rice. 😀 The usual chocolate porridge is made out of oats.

So, if you’re not used to eating rice, let alone, chocolate rice, you might have second thoughts about champorado.

But you know what? It just takes for you to try it once to like it. 😃 It’s actually good.

How To Cook Champorado Effortlessly

If you want to know how to cook champorado effortlessly, you can consider using the White King Champorado mix.

White King Champorado mix has everything figured out for you. A box of White King Champorado contains a mixture of chocolate and glutinous rice.

All you need to do is to boil the contents of White King Champorado mix. Once the mixture is cooked, you can add some milk or sugar for an added layer of sweetness.

Other brands of champordado mixes are Maya, Sarap Pinoy, and Mama Sita’s, all of which are available in the grocery store.

A Very Simple Champorado Recipe

You can also make champorado from scratch. That’s exactly what we did when we didn’t champorado mix at home.

We were lucky we had some. Some kind-hearted friends of ours gave us huge blocks of tablea from Bohol. 🙂

Tablea Is The Star Ingredient

Tablea is made out of cacao beans. The cacao beans are processed and molded into blocks or tablets of pure chocolate. 😃

It’s safe to say that tablea is pretty much pure chocolate. It’s often used to make hot chocolate.

Of course, you can use it to make champorado as well. Here’s how to cook champorado with the use of tablea.

Boil five cups of water. Then add in one cup of rice. We also didn’t have any glutinous rice so we just used regular rice. 😃

Cook the rice first and it’s okay to use regular rice. 👍

Add in the tablea once the rice is cooked. Since we had a huge block of tablea, we just chopped off a good portion of it. It’s up to you how much tablea you want to add.

Just keep on mixing until the liquid disappears. When it does, it will become thicker and creamier.

You can always add in some sugar or condensed milk to add in a layer of sweetness.

Some folks pair champorado with some tuyo. I haven’t really tried eating it with tuyo. I prefer to eat champorado with condensed milk. However, some folks find the contrasting flavors of champoprado and tuyo quite tasty. 😀
